Summary:Based on the corpus of cadastre and census books of the period between 1620s and 1721, the article examines the migration of the residents of the city of Veliky Ustyug, its directions and dynamics. The socio-economic, tax, political, and demographic factors of migration processes are presented. The historiography of this problem is taken into account mainly in respect of the Russian North and Siberia. Some anthropological and ethno-cultural aspects of the problem are pointed out.
