Summary:The article is devoted to toponymic traditions and legends of the Khanta of the Polnovatsky Priobie of the Beloyar district of the Khanty-Mansiy Autonomous District - Ugra of the Tyumen Region. The material was field materials of the author, recorded from 1996 to 2013 and literary sources. Toponymic tales and legends referred to as the oral fairy-tale prose. The appeal to toponymic traditions and legends makes it possible to look into the distant past, when the territory of Polnovatsky Priobie was settled, to better study the peculiarities of the life and life of the displaced, they reflect all aspects of the spiritual and material life of the people. They have a peculiar mark of time (for example, during the flood, when the earth was formed, in fabulous times, when snow fell, etc.), the place of action, some pre-history is given, which precedes the moment of the name of the place. The article for the first time considers and analyzes the local originality of plots and motives of toponymic legends and legends, which indicates its novelty. Unpublished field materials are introduced into scientific circulation. The classification of texts is made on a thematic basis, but it is very conditional. Having considered the available texts, it can be noted that the most common are the texts of the war between the Khanty and Nenets because of the territories. The other group is based on folk etymology. The third group of texts connects the toponym with the features of the area. They are characterized by the following features: localization of the place and time of the event, focus on the reliability of information. The main characters are the ancestors of the clans currently living in this territory, ordinary people. Currently, the only indisputable witness of a long-past fact may be toponyms, so the study of the origin of toponyms of the native land is relevant.
