Description
Summary:Wetlands are very important areas for biodiversity, as such, they play a key role in the conservation of the populations of many species. Hunting activity has a direct impact on the populations of some bird species, so its study is relevant to measure the sustainability of this activity. Currently, there are no studies that make an approximation of the impact of hunting on the populations of quarry birds in the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca. This study shows that the impact of hunting on the populations of Coot, Great Snipe and Lapwing in the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca seems to be low, since the pattern of presence of these species are compatible with natural movements. On the other hand, the impact of hunting on wildfowl is severe. Wildfowl are highly concentrated in a small area of lagoons (about 60 ha.) and the hunting-free refuge within is inefective. This situation results in a steep decrease of about 90% of wildfowl in a few days after the begining of the hunting season. I propose the review of the location and size of the refuge zone in Torreblanca, and the rationalization of the hunting pressure (number of hunters, days and quota) to adapt it to the reality of the wildfowl populations in the wetland. A moratorium in the hunting of the Red-Crested Pochard should be considered due to long term negative trends that shows this species. This study is a contribution to the necessary rationalization of the hunting activity in the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca, so it can be compatible with the protection of quarry waterbird populations.
