Summary:This article presents the results of an investigation undertaken on five diversified farms located in the Costa Rican North-Atlantic zone, it includes the counties of Sarapiquí, Pococí and Guácimo. The article analyzes the mixed vegetable gardens located in those farms, and their role family economy. This cases where conducted under a commonly used epistemological historical- cultural approach. Each vegetable garden was analyzed with the farm it belongs to, considering particular characteristics and the way it is managed. Also, producers where interviewed about the benefits they get from vegetable gardens and their personal economic situation. Said vegetable gardens usually cover less than 10 % of the total farm area. Their products are used for self consumption and sold in the local farmers markets. This vegetable gardens are part of the diversification strategy of farms, which warrantees food security and helps to counteract the unstable prices of agricultural products in the market. Se presenta los resultados de una investigación, efectuada en cinco fincas diversificadas ubicadas en los cantones de Sarapiquí, Pococí y Guácimo (región noratlántica costarricense), enfocada en los huertos mixtos tropicales familiares existentes en dichas fincas y enfilada a determinar el peso de cada huerto en cada economía familiar. A partir del estudio de casos comúnmente empleado en la investigación bajo el enfoque epistemológico histórico-cultural, se analizó cada huerto en el conjunto de cada finca, en términos de su composición y manejo; se entrevistó a los productores y productoras sobre las bondades de los huertos y se colectó información económica de éstos. Los huertos familiares estudiados no suelen sobrepasar el 10 por ciento del área de cada finca, proveen productos para el autoconsumo familiar y están vinculados al mercado de las ferias de agricultores dadas en sus cercanías.
