Description
Summary:Chilean Antarctic History received an important impulse from the so-called question of the "Southern Isles" during the governorships of Magallanes of Briceño and Señoret between 1892 and 1896. The crucial element and key to this administrative and political process carried out by these governors was the discovery and exploitation of gold and the grazing and forestry activities in the southern isles of Navarino, Lennox, Picton and Nueva to the south of the Beagle Channel. After the Arbitral Award of 1902 the actions executed during that foundational period acquired an unexpected value and favoured the concession of marine and land resources to private persons in those southern islands and to the "undefined" south of Cape Horn and Diego Ramirez.
