Summary:In the first years of my PhD, I read about agriculture in the context of political economy and historical sociology, but it was towards the end of my PhD years that I became interested in not only the production side but also the consumption side. And at that time, roughly the second half of the 90s, there wasn't really a very developed sociology of food literature as it is today. It was limited. When I was thinking about what to work on for my doctoral thesis, I came across Sidney Mintz's Sweetness and Power. I was very impressed by this work. It was a book that told the whole world history through sugar with its many different stages and transformations. There was colonialism, industrialization, America and Europe. Starting from the 16th century, it explained how sugar shaped modern life with all its actors, injustices and rituals. In the same period, I came across the book "Culinary Cultures of the Middle East" compiled by Sami Zubaida and Richard Tapper. It was a very rich collection. It included Istanbul and Yemen, baklava and keshkek. It was a very eye-opening book about very different geographies and the very serious social and cultural problems that those very different geographies contain. So I became interested not only in the production side of food and drink, but also in its cultural aspects. I can say that it was an interest that grew and grew more through books.
