Description
Summary:1 photographic print Photograph of Schoonover with his "wabeno," or outdoor studio. He traveled to the Hudson Bay area of Canada in the winter of 1903-1904. A note by Schoonover states: "I had been told by old Hudson Bay Factors, that it would be impossible to sketch out of doors in the midwinter Canadian woods, but before leaving Quebec, I had made a small canvas tent with a glazed folding window. Whenver I found a picturesque subject I set up my tent, built a fire that warmed it within, and sketched through the woindow, which I kept free of frost by covering it with a solution of glycerine and high-wine. It was quite comfortable in this tent if you kept the stove very hot. It was often 30 to 40 below when the pictures were being made. The Indians called this canvas studio the 'Wabeno' because it looked like those huts in which the Indian conjurers perform their incantations."
