Description
Summary:Blue line print, pictorial map. Shows roads, trails, railroads, creeks, wildlife, oil field, and mountains. Includes decorative cartouche and compass rose, text about historical events, personage, and places. Relief shown pictorially. "Ralph Shane was born in 1910 in a small midwestern town (Edelstein, Illinois), went on to get his degree in engineering, and from there took off on a series of jobs across the West, doing infrastructure projects from Montana to California. Throughout this time he worked on projects on Indian Reservations, and it became a considerable portion of work he did. He would later become an administrator on one of these reservations. His continued interactions and fascination with Native peoples came to fruit later in life when he went into publishing and began a series of historical maps on Native tribes of the West. Clearly influenced by his predecessor Irvin "Shorty" Shope, who had done a few similar things in the 1930s, Ralph's work would go further."
