Director of the Scientific editorial institute; O. Y. Shmidta; A. N. Baranova; V. E. Motylev; I. V. Sautina; B. M. Shaposhnikova. and S. A. Kytafev managing editor of volume II. Issued by Narodnikh Komissarov Soiuza SSR and Glavnym Upravleniyem Geodezii i Kartografii pri SNK SSSR. Both volumes contain color thematic and historical maps, index of geographical names, contents, text, tables and diagrams. Includes vignette of Stalin and Lenin stamped above title. Bound in blue calico bindings, with title "Bolshoi Sovietskii Atlas Mira I” and "Bolshoi Sovietskii Atlas Mira II" with embossed insignia of the Soviet Union stamped on top. On the spine is the same title under a five-pointed star with a world map. Maps are full color, various sizes, some double page or larger, each with cover title, Include legend, diagram, tables, graded circle symbols and notes. Volume I contains 168 maps of the world, printed in 1937, with supplementary index of place names of the first volume, printed in 1940. Maps show political and administrative boundaries, populations, nationalities, religions, agriculture of various types, mining, power developments, industry, economic, climatic, forestry, transport and communications, trade, explorations and colonies, and maps of the World War. Volume II contains 143 maps of Russia in 2 parts, printed in 1939. Part I: plates 9-133: Economic survey and physical maps of individual republics and regions of the USSR. Part II. Plates 134-143: Maps on the history of the Russian Civil War. City plans showing city districts, street names, city blocks, landmarks, parks, public buildings, fortress, railroads, canals and waterways. Relief shown by contours, spot heights and gradient tints. Depth shown by isolines and soundings and bathymetric tints.
