Description
Summary:Remarkable scenes of oil wells in most views. Oil has clearly taken over in this county - the views are the usual pictures of houses, businesses, and farms, but there are oil wells in the background everywhere. The views are also colored by hand, this being one of only four county atlases that we have seen with colored views (see also Greene County, Pennsylvania, by Caldwell, Warren County, Pennsylvania, by Howden and Odbert, and Beaver County, Pennsylvania by Caldwell). All four atlases were lithographed by Otto Krebs of Pittsburgh, who may have had the facilities for coloring the views. Another connection between the atlases is the listing on the title pages of J.A. Howden as an assistant; he then went on to publish the Warren County Atlas the following year. Pagination irregular. Maps with full color. Bound in half leather dark teal blue cloth covered boards with "Caldwell's Illustrated, Historical, Combination Atlas Of Clarion Co. Pennsylvania by J.A. Caldwell. 1877." stamped in gilt. P16776.
