Description
Summary:Engraved map. Relief shown by hachures; depths by soundings. Shows anchorages of the Frigates Astrolabe and Boussole. John Dunmore's Pacific explorer: the life of Jean-Francois de La Perouse . p. 254 states the location is probably Tomari Bay, Sakhalin. La Perouse set sail from France in 1785 to continue the discoveries of Captain Cook. He was shipwrecked in 1788 but his narrative, maps, and views survived and were published in 1797. This copy consists of the Atlas only to the First French edition. It is an exceptional copy, with very strong impressions. It should be compared to the smaller English Atlas of 1799. Maps are without color and bound in half leather brown marbled paper covered boards with "La Perouse's Voyages. Atlas" stamped in gilt on the spine. Issued to accompany: Voyage de la Perouse autour du monde . an V (1797) Phillips, 688; Howes. U.S.iana, 93; Mickwitz. A.E. Nordenskiold Collection . annotated catalogue of maps made up to 1800, v.2 no. 133.
