Summary:Oral communication is generally neglected in the teaching of French in Canada. This situation is partially due to the limited place allotted to the development of oral skills in the Department of Education curricula. The goal of this research project is to compare Alberta’s former French first language curriculum (1998) to the new draft curriculum (2022) in order to verify the extent to which the place of oral French communication has changed. This analysis has shown that, in the new curriculum, the different components of oral communication are more developed including in the case of First Nations, Metis and Inuit perspectives, the oral objectives are more numerous and better defined, the oral genres are more clearly identified, and the elements of Francophone culture and identity elements take greater account of diversity.
