Description
Summary:These two datasets in the format tab-delimited text file (Plots.txt and Sobfossil_logs.txt) contain the data used in the article "Millennial disturbance-driven forest stand dynamics in the Eastern Canadian taiga reconstructed from subfossil logs", published in Journal of Ecology. Each row in Plots.txt contains data on a sampling plot (10 x 10 m) used to characterize the structure and composition of the present-day lakeshore forest at the site L18 or the site L20. Column headings are described below: Plot = Plot ID Lake = Lake ID LivingSpruces = Number of living spruces in the plot (No.) LivingFirs = Number of living firs in the plot (No.) LivingFirs2 = Number of living firs ≥ 2 cm DBH in the plot (No.) LivingFirsReg = Number of living firs among saplings and seedlings in the plot (No.) LivingTamaracks = Number of living tamaracks in the plot (No.) LivingTamaracks2 = Number of living tamaracks ≥ 2 cm DBH in the plot (No.) LivingTamaracksReg = Number of living tamaracks among saplings and seedlings in the plot (No.) Snags = Number of snags in the plot (No.) Stumps = Number of stumps in the plot (No.) Ncwd = Number of coarse woody debris pieces in the plot (No.) Nliv = Number of living trees in the plot (No.) Nreg = Number of saplings and seedlings in the plot (No.) Nliv2 = Number of living trees ≥ 2 cm DBH in the plot (No.) Nliv6 = Number of living trees ≥ 6 cm DBH in the plot (No.) Nliv12 = Number of living trees ≥ 12 cm DBH in the plot (No.) Age = Time since the last stand-replacing fire in the plot (i.e. maximum number of tree-rings per cored tree after applying a correction for coring height) (years) BAliv = Basal area of living trees ≥ 2 cm DBH in the plot (m2 plot-1) MeanBAliv = Average basal area per living tree ≥ 2 cm DBH in the plot (m2 plot-1) BAsnags = Basal area of snags in the plot (m2 plot-1) BAstumps = Basal area of stumps in the plot (m2 plot-1) Each row in Sobfossil_logs.txt contains data on a subfossil log sampled in the littoral zone facing the selected lakeshore segments at L18 or L20. Column headings are described below: ID = Subfossil log ID Start = Year of the first measured ring (AD year) End = Year of the last measured ring (AD year) Length = Segment length (years) Plot = Nearest lakeshore plot Cluster = Cluster of the nearest lakeshore plot Pith = Presence of the pith (1 = pith well preserved; 0 = missing pith) First_ring = Year of the first ring in the cross-section (AD year) Last_ring = Year of the last ring in the cross-section (AD year) Fire = Fire evidence (Charred_branch_tips or Charred_trunk) Species = Species of the subfossil logs (Spruce or Fir) Pith_offset = Pith offset (years) Subsequent columns = Ring widths according to cambial ages (1/100 mm) Further details can be found in the published article.
