Archaeological and other cultural resources evaluation of one project area identified by the US Department of Agriculture resulted in on-site archaeological inspection of Dam #1 in the North American Waterfowl Management (NAWM) project (24 acres) (Ferguson et al. 1994). Inspection identified potentially significant cultural resources within the impact area associated with construction of Dam #l– NAWM including several engineering (water control) structures associated with mid- to late nineteenth- and possibly early twentieth-century (post-1840) tidal rice culture at Marrington Plantation on Back River.
