Subglacial Lake Ellsworth, 2007/08 shallow ice core for density measurements

Analysis of shallow ice cores collected in the region of subglacial Lake Ellsworth. Three cores drilled to ~20 m depth. Two cores returned to UK for analysis. One core measured for density-depth in the field, then discarded. One of the two cores returned to UK has been sent to Bristol University for...

Description
Summary:Analysis of shallow ice cores collected in the region of subglacial Lake Ellsworth. Three cores drilled to ~20 m depth. Two cores returned to UK for analysis. One core measured for density-depth in the field, then discarded. One of the two cores returned to UK has been sent to Bristol University for major anion/cation analysis; the other core is at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and will be analysed for accumulation rate. Density analysis is complete. Chemical analysis is complete. Accumulation analysis is in progress. : Core drilled to just over 20 m depth using PICO hand drill. Core quality - good Core diameter between 70-80 mm Core cut into a total of 94 sections; mean section length 21.6 cm For each section, length and diameter were measured with ruler and calipers, respectively. For each section, mass measured with an electronic balance. : Field notebooks + analyses held at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and Bristol University Date drilled and measured: 28 December 2007 (depth 0-15 m) 21 January 2008 (depth 15-20 m) : Estimated error in calculated density mostly of the order +/-30 kg/m^3
