Description
Summary:Tanypus (Tanypus) punctipennis (Meigen) (Fig. 3 E–F). Material examined. CANADA: Manitoba, Lake Winnipeg, Hecla Island, 2 males, 27.vii. 1971; Beaver Creek, 2 males, 26.vii. 1971. Distribution and ecology. The species is a summer form known from running waters, littoral of lakes, ponds and puddles in most of North America and the Palaearctic region and from Oriental China, Taiwan and Indonesia (Brundin 1949: 694; Thienemann 1954: 505, 511, 541, 649; Reiss 1968: 225; Roback 1971: 67, 1977: 77; Oliver et al. 1990: 16; Spies 1999; Epler 2003, 2010; Caldwell 2009; Ashe & O’Connor 2009: 231). Brundin (1949: 694) regards the species in Sweden as a southern one reaching its highest development in eutrophic lakes. According to Thienemann (1954: 649) T. punctipennis is weakly saprophilous. In Lake Winnipeg the species probably is restricted to the mud of lower parts of streams and rivers and to isolated shallow bays, i.e. corresponding to the distribution in Lake Constance (Reiss 1968: 225). ... : Published as part of Saether, Ole A., 2011, Notes on some tanypods from Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (Diptera: Chironomidae), pp. 26-42 in Zootaxa 3069 on page 30, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.201708 ...
