Description
Summary:Philine harrisae sp. nov. Figures 22–23 Type material. HOLOTYPE: About 273 km off Oceanside, Oregon (45º27.0’N, 127º28.1’W), 2783 m depth, R/ V Yaquina (4-7301-5; Oregon State University BMT-318), 3 Feb 1973, 1 specimen, 15 mm preserved length (LACM 3437). Description. Shell unknown. Preserved animal to 15 mm long. Body oval, about twice as long as wide (Fig. 22 A). Cephalic shield elongate. Digestive system with a large, oval buccal bulb, surrounded by the central nervous system posteriorly (Fig. 23 A). Esophagus as wide as the buccal bulb. Two salivary glands insert posteriorly on the buccal bulb at the insertion point of the esophagus. Gizzard large, muscular. Gizzard plates (3) elongate, with longitudinal grooves on both the inner and outer surface (Fig. 22 B–C). Radular formula 13 x 1.0.1. Lateral teeth with large, wide bases and robust, hook-shaped, smooth cusps (Fig. 22 D). Reproductive system with a long prostate connected directly into penis, lacking a tubular loop (Fig. 23 B). Penis complex, short and wide with several blunt expansions and a blunt apex (Figs. 22 E, 23C). Range. Off the Oregon coast (Fig. 3 B), 2783 m depth. Etymology. Dedicated to Leslie Harris (LACM) for her enthusiastic help to this project as well as many others. Remarks. This deep-water species is unique in the study area by having longitudinal notched gizzard plates. Also, the radular teeth are more robust than in the other species. : Published as part of Valdés, Ángel, Cadien, Donald B. & Gosliner, Terrence M., 2016, Philinidae, Laonidae and Philinorbidae (Gastropoda: Cephalaspidea: Philinoidea) from the northeastern Pacific Ocean and the Beaufort Sea (Arctic Ocean), pp. 501-537 in Zootaxa 4147 (5) on page 533, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4147.5.1, http://zenodo.org/record/254939
