Summary:The RADIS-L model was used to describe the thermal properties of the sea ice surface (Zhou et al., 2017). It245was originally designed for characterising radiative transfer of X- and L-band radiation depending on soil moisturecontent (Burke et al., 1979) but was later modified to work over sea ice (Maaß, 2013) and applied to retrievals ofsnow depth over thick ice (Maaß et al., 2013). Zhou et al. (2017) further modified the code to account for verticalsalinity and temperature profiles in the sea ice instead of using bulk quantities. Another modification was madeto differentiate ice salinity profiles as a function of ice types. L-band Tbs were previously simulated using this250modified version of RADIS-L v1.0 following the radiative properties computations over the sea ice cover, includingpermittivity, reflectivity and emissivity, in Kaleschke et al. (2010) and Maaß et al. (2013). The updated RADIS-L v1.1 further introduces parameterizations of brine-wetted and slush snow layers over Antarctic sea ice. ...
