Det færøske partisystem er kendetegnet ved, at de politiske partier deler sig på to dimensioner således forstået, at en anden central politisk skillelinje end den socio-økonomiske også antages at influere på såvel vælger- som partiplanet. Denne anden politiske skillelinje/dimension omhandler spørgsmålet om Færøernes nationale tilhørsforhold, dvs. om hvorvidt en løsrivelse fra eller en fortsat tilknytning til Danmark er ønskværdig. Dermed kan problemstillingen anskues som værende spørgsmålet om, i hvilken udstrækning de to konfliktlinjer, hhv. den socio-økonomiske højre/venstre og den nationalt betingede m.h.t. det danske tilhørsforhold, er determinerende for valgresultaterne. Når udgangspunktet således tages i de færøske lagtingsvalg, er det dermed kun en del af den samlede transformationsproces der vil blive belyst i undersøgelsen - nærmere betegnet den del af processen og af den afledte politiske udvikling, der kommer til udtryk i vælgeradfærden. Ud fra et ønske om mere uddybende at kunne behandle nogle ... : One characteristic feature of the Faroese party system is that the parties are divided in two 'dimensions' which means that another central political dividing line than the socio-economic one is assumed to exert influence on voter as well as on party level. This second political dividing line/dimension concerns the question of the national affiliation of the Faroe Islands, i.e. whether people want a severance from or continued affiliation with Denmark. # Thus, the problem presents itself as being a question of the extent to which the two conflicting aspects, i.e. the socio-economic right/left and the nationally oriented one as regards affiliation with Denmark, are determinant for the election results.
