Description
Summary:This annual survey, fielded October 2011 to January 2012, was conducted in 59 countries to solicit public opinion on social and political issues. Respondents were asked whether they thought 2012 would be better or worse than 2011, whether the economy would be better in 2012 than in 2011, and whether they were happy or unhappy with their life. Respondents were also queried on whether they thought immigration was a good thing or bad thing for their country, whether they considered themselves to be a religious or non-religious person, whether they or their family had not had enough to eat in the last twelve months, whether they had done any voluntary work in the past year, and whether they thought the world would be more peaceful next year than in the past year. Finally, respondents were asked whether economy-related protests and industrial disputes in their country would increase or decrease in 2012, and to give their opinion on a number of different organizations such as the World Health Organization, United Nations, World Economic Forum, Transparency International, Human Rights Watch, and the International Committee of the Red Cross. Additional questions included the respondent's assessment of their ability to read and understand a simple newspaper story and to write a simple letter in the English language. Demographic information includes age, gender, education, employment status, household income, and religious affiliation. : Two types of weights are applied -- one from the member country and the other by Gallup International Association, calculated on the basis of country population. : ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection: Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.. : Datasets: DS1: Voice of the People End of Year Survey, 2011 : Voice of the People Series : face-to-face interview, telephone interview, web-based survey Although the study title indicates that the survey was carried out in 2011, the "Summary Chart on Methods" states that Poland carried out the survey between December 30, 2011 and January 5, 2012. Sample type, weights, and mode of collection vary by country. Detailed weighting information was not provided by the Primary Investigator. Please refer to the "Summary Chart on Methods" section of the ICPSR codebook for additional information on sample type and mode of collection for each country. Please refer to the "Summary Chart on Methods" for those countries that were participants in this survey. The setup files may contain references to a number of countries that were not participants in this survey. This collection contains no data for these countries. The Mode of Interview, Coverage, and Field Work Dates in the Summary section following the "Summary Chart on Methods" contains information inconsistent with what is reported in the "Summary Chart on Methods". For Austria, Fiji, Ghana, Iceland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Tunisia, the total number of interviews in the "Summary Chart on Methods" does not match the total number of interviews in the data file. Please disregard column locations provided in the "Questionnaire" as they are not applicable to the ICPSR-provided data file. The column locations for the ICPSR-provided data file can be found in the SPSS and SAS setup files, and Stata dictionary file. Smallest Geographic Unit: country : The survey was conducted in 59 countries, with an approximate minimal sample size of 500 per country. Wherever possible, within each country a nationally representative sample of n = 500 adults, male and female, aged 18 years and over was used. In some emergent countries, where such research conditions are not possible, there may be stated variations to this (e.g., urban areas only). Similarly, in the developed world, interviews were conducted by telephone, while in emergent and underdeveloped countries, face-to-face interviews were conducted.
