Description
Summary:The article considers the role and functions of the native language as a constituent of the Evenk peoples ethnic awareness (the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic). Among the major problems relating to the language usage in the Sakha Republic, the authors separate out the ongoing reduction of certain functions in the language domain of indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North. In our opinion, the root of the tendency in question lies at underestimation of national languages significance and their role in ethnic group preservation. Ethnic selfdefinition is a mental process and is provoked as an individuals immanent introjection into his national culture when capturing knowledge about the assembly of symbolic cultural elements, such as an ethnic groups language.
