The Development of a Translator's Manual for the Canons of Theophany and its Use in a Missionary Setting

The research for this thesis was focused on whether use of a manual for the translation of a liturgical text can reduce errors in the 1st draft of a translation. For this research, manuals for translators were developed and tested for five hymns chanted for the feast of Theophany: the heirmos of Ode 1, Canon 1; and troparia 1 and 2 of Ode 9 of both canons. The manuals were tested by seven students with no prior translation experience at two Eastern Orthodox Christian theological schools (Kenya and Alaska), two Orthodox priests in Kenya, and two publication specialists in south Korea, who translated into Kikuyu, Maragoli, Swahili, Yupik, or Korean. Based on the results, the following conclusions were made: Use of a liturgical translator’s manual can be effective in both the prevention and detection phases of the translation quality assurance process. Successful use of a manual depends on personal factors associated with people who earned a four-year university degree or higher. Individuals without a university degree can improve their translations through use of a translation for translators (TFT). The quality assurance methods used for Bible translation projects are applicable to liturgical translation projects. : Η έρευνά για αυτή την διατριβή επικεντρώθηκε αφενός στο αν η χρήση ενός εγχειριδίου για τη μετάφραση ενός λειτουργικού κειμένου μπορεί να μειώσει τα λάθη στο πρώτο πρόχειρο μιας μετάφρασης. Για αυτήν την έρευνα, εγχειρίδια για μεταφραστές αναπτύχθηκαν και δοκιμάστηκαν για πέντε ύμνους που ψάλλονται στη γιορτή των Θεοφανείων: Ο Ειρμός από την Ωδή α΄, Κανών 1, και Τροπάρια 1 και 2 της Ωδής θ΄ αμφοτέρων των κανόνων. Τα εγχειρίδια δοκιμάστηκαν από εφτά μαθητές, χωρίς προηγούμενη εμπειρία στη μετάφραση, σε δύο Ορθόδοξες Χριστιανικές θεολογικές σχολές (Κένυα και Αλάσκα), από δύο Ορθόδοξους Ιερείς στην Κένυα, και δύο μέλη ενός γραφείου δημοσιεύσεων Ορθόδοξων στη Νότια Κορέα, οι οποίοι μετέφρασαν στα Κικούγιου, Μαραγκόλι, Σουαχίλι, Γιούπικ ή Κορεάτικα. Με βάση τα αποτελέσματα, έγιναν τα ακόλουθα συμπεράσματα: Η χρήση εγχειριδίων βελτιώνει την ποιότητα των μεταφράσεων. Η επιτυχής χρήση εξαρτάται από προσωπικούς παράγοντες. Η χρήση μιας Μετάφρασης για Μεταφραστές βελτιώνει την ποιότητα. Οι μέθοδοι διασφάλισης ποιότητας για τη μετάφραση της Βίβλου είναι χρήσιμες για τη μετάφραση λειτουργικών κειμένων.
