Summary:Here, we present major element and volatile concentrations for a suite of 19 olivine(Fo38-87)- and plagioclase(An38-86)-hosted melt inclusions and 23 matrix glasses from 4 bulk samples collected from the 43 BCE caldera-forming eruption of Okmok Volcano, Alaska (Okmok II). This eruption has recently been connected with a sulfur-rich layer in Greenland ice cores that contains tephra matching the geochemical composition of Okmok II eruptive products. Proxy evidence of climate cooling and historical observations of extreme climate also coincide with the timing of Okmok II, thus prompting further study of the volatiles released during the eruption. Melt inclusions, host crystals, and matrix glasses were singly polished and analyzed by Electron Microprobe, with select inclusions also measured by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), with the goal of producing a total petrologic S load for the Okmok II eruption.
