Description
Summary:This thesis is concerned with the presentation of the change of faith from heathendom to Christianity in Hallfreðar saga, other sagas of Icelanders and the sagas of Olaf Tryggvason. Of interest is not only the conversion itself but also the period of transition. The spatial and temporal width of the analysis gets defined by the fact that the sagas of interest take place in Iceland and Norway in the tenth and eleventh centuries. This period of time is moreover one that is strongly marked by the encounter of the two religions and their co-existence. Special interest is laid on Hallfreðar saga because it shows very well the individual change of its protagonist from being a heathen to being a Christian. Other sagas of Icelanders and the sagas of Olaf Tryggvason contribute to putting this personal development into a wider context and through these sagas similarities and differences concerning Hallfreðar saga´s treatment of the topic get visible. A good deal of attention is paid to presumed or obvious influences of Christian literature because they show how the authors of the sagas intended to skew events which the sagas tell into a certain direction.
