Description
Summary:The MARIA S. MERIAN cruise MSM08 "Circulation and ecosystems in the tropical northeast Atlantic and the Baltic Sea" consisted of three legs, with different regional and scientific foci. The MSM08/1 concentrated regionally on the tropical Atlantic, the MSM08/2 contained a section over the northeast Atlantic, whereas MSM08/3 took place in the Baltic Sea. The scientific highlight of MSM08/1 was the second successful deployment of OTIS (Ocean Tracer Injection System) in the framework of the Sonderforschungsbereich SFB754. A well defined amount of SF5CF3 was injected into the water column on this leg, and its distribution will be studied during the following months (see section 1). The MSM08/2 leg focused on the physical, chemical and biological properties of the surface layer of the northeast Atlantic. At the same time master and PhD students and post docs from 7 European nations participated in the Floating University 2008 (see section 2). MSM08/3 in the Baltic Sea was filled with intensive interdisciplinary work over 4 weeks, culminating in high resolution vertical profiles of different properties across the redoxcline in the Gotland Deep and Lansdsort Deep obtained by the Pump-CTD (see section 3). Scientifically MARIA S. MERIAN cruise MSM08 was successful, which is evidently shown by the current preparation of first publications concerning MSM08. : MARIA S. MERIAN-Berichte
