Interannual variability in the physical environment: zooplankton, capelin (Mallotus villosus), and Northeast Arctic cod (Gadus morhua) in the Barents Sea ...

This article describes the variability in the Barents Sea environment (from time series of air and water temperature, salinity, ice coverage, oxygen and phosphate content) and its biota (abundance and biomass of plankton, capelin, and cod). With an emphasis on the 1990s, comparisons are made with ea...

Description
Summary:This article describes the variability in the Barents Sea environment (from time series of air and water temperature, salinity, ice coverage, oxygen and phosphate content) and its biota (abundance and biomass of plankton, capelin, and cod). With an emphasis on the 1990s, comparisons are made with earlier years and decades. Strong relationships are found between most of the environmental indices, indicating a common source of variability. Few links are found between the environmental and biological variables, the exception being between oxygen levels in the near bottom layers and cod recruitment as measured at age 3.Article from Marine Science Symposia Vol. 219 - "Hydrobiological variability in the ICES Area, 1990-1999", symposium held in Edinburgh, 8-10 August 2001.
