Summary:Based on the most recent estimates of SSB (in 2009), ICES classifies the stock as suffering reduced reproductive capacity. Based on the most recent estimate of fishing mortality (in 2008), ICES classifies the stock as being harvested unsustainably. The stock has been harvested unsustainably since the late 1980s. The fishing mortality in recent years is uncertain, but total mortality remains very high. The spawning-stock biomass has declined ten-fold since the late 1980s and has had reduced reproductive capacity since the mid-1990s. Recruitment has been below average for the past seventeen years and the seven most recent year classes are amongst the smallest on record. ...
