Description
Summary:This dissertation focuses on the 1969 National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) in Alaska and America and the Environmental Assessment (EA) framework in the Arctic. The dissertation discusses the historical, social, and legal context that gave rise to NEPA, one of the landmark modern American environmental laws. It argues that Alaskan environmental battles over nuclear and energy projects, as well as over land, helped to shape NEPA as it was written and as it is implemented today. It further looks at the effects that NEPA has had on the Alaskan environment and people, particular natives. Lastly, this works extends into the Arctic by following how NEPA has been adopted and improved upon by other nations and by international environmental governance bodies.
