Description
Summary:Ambarchik is located at the mouth of the Kolyma River, which opens to the East Siberian Sea (69.62N, 162.30E). The majority of the landscape in the immediate vicinity of the locality is wet tussock tundra. At the ecoregion scale, Ambarchik is bordered by Northeast Siberian Coastal Tundra ecoregion in the west, the Chukchi Peninsula Tundra ecoregion in the east, and the Northeast Siberian Taiga ecoregion in the south. Major components contributing to the net carbon exchange processes in the area are tundra landscapes including wetlands and lakes, as well as the Kolyma River and the East Siberian Arctic Shelf. Ambarchik hosts a weather station operated by the Russian meteorological service, whose staff is the entire permanent population of the locality. The closest town is Chersky (∼ 100 km to the south, with a population of 2857 as of 2010), with no other larger permanent settlement closer than 240 km. Thus, the site does not have any major sources of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions in the nearby. The ...
