Summary:Indigenous peoples in Canada represent diverse nations, communities and groups including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. These distinct groups of First Peoples have resided on Turtle Island for time immemorial. While Indigenous peoples in Canada are diverse in their language, tradition, and culture, they have endured similar experiences of colonialism and its ongoing impact on all aspects of life. Due to colonialism, Indigenous peoples across Canada experience significant health inequities and disparities when compared to the non-Indigenous population including increased rates of mortality, substance misuse, suicide and chronic disease requiring access to quality healthcare services. There is also evidence of increased rates of hospitalization among Indigenous peoples when compared to the non-Indigenous population.
