Summary:The objectives of the cruise were to study the water mass distribution and circulation in the western part of the subpolar North Atlantic (Labrador and Irminger Seas) and to infer water mass formation rates. Special focus was on investigating the different components of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). Particularly its lightest contribution, called Labrador Sea Water (LSW) was considered. Spreading pathways and respective water mass properties in the western basins of the subpolar North were analyzed by measuring standard hydrographic parameters, anthropogenic tracers such as chlorofluorocarbon and sulphurhexafluoride, as well as components related to the oceanic carbon system.
