Monthly data set of sea ice production and thin ice type for the Northern Hemisphere ...

We provide monthly data for sea ice production (m/month) and occurrence rates of thin ice and active frazil for all sea ice-covered oceans in the Northern Hemisphere during the winters (September-May) of 2002/2003 to 2010/2011. The sea ice data are mapped onto the National Snow and Ice Data Center (...

Description
Summary:We provide monthly data for sea ice production (m/month) and occurrence rates of thin ice and active frazil for all sea ice-covered oceans in the Northern Hemisphere during the winters (September-May) of 2002/2003 to 2010/2011. The sea ice data are mapped onto the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) polar stereographic projection with a grid spacing of 6.25 km. For information on how to access the geolocation data, please see the website of NSIDC (https://nsidc.org/data/user-resources/help-center/guide-nsidcs-polar-stereographic-projection). The monthly occurrence rates of thin ice and active frazil are calculated by using daily thin ice type retrieved from AMSR-E microwave data. The estimation of ice production is based on a heat flux calculation that uses ERA5 reanalysis product and AMSR-E ice thickness improved by taking account of the ice type. The calculation period of the occurrence rates includes the sea ice melt season, in which the accuracy of thin ice detection is considerably reduced. When ...
