Description
Summary:1. This dataset contains shapefile coastal ice masks of the Marie Byrd Land Sector of West Antarctica for years 2003, 2008, 2010 and 2015, as derived by Christie et al. (2018).2. Masks were produced using the grounding line and ice frontal position data contained in this collection (see Dataset 1 - Grounding line and ice frontal positions for the Marie Byrd Land Sector of West Antarctica, 2003-2015, with links to shapefiles https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.884780), as derived from Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper, Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager and Terra-ASTER Level 1 Terrain Corrected optical satellite imagery. Along poorly surveyed parts of the coastline (e.g. in areas of fast ice flow or excessive cloud coverage), Ib picks from Bindschadler et al. (2011, doi:10.5194/tcd-5-183-2011) and Haran et al. (2014, doi:10.1029/2011GL047109) were used to fill the gaps in our Landsat-derived data coverage. Where this was not possible, the position of the circa 2007 limit of tidal flexure - a separate proxy for the true GL derived from interferometric synthetic aperture radar analysis - was used (cf. Rignot et al., 2011, doi:10.1029/2011GL047109). Collectively, these areas account for <1% of the Marie Byrd Land Sector coastline.3. The datasets are contained in a single zip archive file and are provided in standard ESRI shapefile format. The data are defined in the Antarctic Polar Stereographic Projection (EPSG:3031) with a standard parallel of -71° S.4. Each dataset contains polyline data with the following attributes:COASTAL ICE MASKS - ATTRIBUTE DESCRIPTION:. DESCRIP: Ice mask classification (floating ice, grounded isolated island, grounded land ice, or ice rise, connecting island or pinning point).. AREA_KM2: Area of surveyed ice mask in kilometers..
