Summary:Policymakers in the British Dominions of Australia, Canada, Newfoundland, New Zealand and South Africa confronted the common questions about Indigenous service in the First World War but with diverse approaches: Under what circumstances (if at all) should Indigenes be permitted to serve? Should they serve in separate units? Indigenous people, too, had to decide whether or not to sign up. Many hoped that by serving, they would be rewarded with greater civil rights after the war; rarely did such hopes eventuate.
