Description
Summary:This is the OBIS extraction of the Ocean Tracking Network and Government of Maine (GoMaine) Maine DMR: Coastal rivers Adult Salmon Stocking, consisting of the release tagging metadata, i.e. the location and date when the tagged animal was released, and summarized detection events of tagged individuals. If readers are interested in the source dataset they may also inquire with the project PIs as listed here or on the OTN web site (https://members.oceantrack.org/project?ccode=MCS). ... : Abstract:Bureau of Sea Run Fisheries and Habitat (BSRFH) staff annually release excess captivereared gravid adult Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) broodstock for augmentation and comparison of current juvenile production from fry stocking. Staff biologists have observed broodstock spawning, documented creation of viable redds by fry trapping, documented juvenile production to the parr lifestage by electrofishing, and trapped emigrating smolts. However, during redd count surveys, BSRFH staff observations suggest approximately 50% of the adult salmon transplanted in a spawning stream are not seen during spawning. It is uncertain if the unobserved adults are being removed from the stream by predators or poachers, or if they are experiencing mortality due to decreased fitness or stress prior to spawning. It is also possible that broodstock are leaving the transplanted stream and spawning in other areas of drainages. Movement of adults outside study reaches potentially confounds wild salmon return estimates, may ...
