| Summary: | The following were the specific research goals established for the national survey of policing in First Nations communities. 1) Develop a reliable and comprehensive data bases which would accurately represent the range and diversity of First Nations police officers and band constables policing in First Nations communities throughout Canada. 2) Provide a systematic socio-demographic and occupational profile of First Nations police officers in Canada which would include information on age , gender, education, cultural background, occupational experience, training, and rank. 3) Provide an accurate assessment of First Nations police officers’ attitudes towards, police work, police organization, the community, the criminal justice system and different policing styles and strategies 4) Identify particular policing concerns and problems that may uniquely affect First Nations police officers (i.e., community expectations, role conflict, occupational and personal stress etc.) 5) Identify First Nations police officers’ training needs and priorities 6) Provide an analysis of the survey findings and discuss their policy implications for future discussion and consultation and where warranted make research based recommendations.
