In addition to standard paleontological methods, relationships between ancient whales (Arachaeoceti), balean whales (Mysticeti) and toothed whales, dolphins and porpoises (Odontoceti), their ancestors and related even–toed ungulates or artiodactyls (Artiodactyla) are studied by molecular biology techniques and hearing system and enamel (substantia adamantina) microstructure analyses.
