Description
Summary:This study characterizes alteration effects on low-rank coal on the Faroe Islands. The basalt lava flows covering the coal-bearing layer caused either slight thermal alteration of the coal surface, but without total elevation of the coal rank, or complete change of the organic matter due to the subsequent hydrothermal activity. The alteration effects were determined by petrographic analyses, including maceral and reflectance analyses, and by geochemical analyses, including ultimate and proximate analyses, whole-rock, trace-element and ultra-trace Hg analyses.
