Description
The mobile trade practiced by Russian merchants in the extreme Northeast of Russia between the middle of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries with the aim of obtaining furs from the natives is viewed as a socio-cultural phenomenon. This phenomenon enabled two communities which differed in their economic points to approach each other. The ethnohistorical approach that was used in the paper has influenced the organisation and analysis of historical materials. The descriptive materials of the contemporaries between the middle of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries were viewed as an ethnographic resource, which was obtained using the methods of participant or direct observations. In the function of parallel-fields ethnographic material that was gathered from merchants carrying out their trade in the extreme Northeast in the end of the 20th century was used. The structure of the article includes the characteristics of the mobile trade participants and the description of the mobile trader's routes. The aim of presenting those routes is demonstration of the spacial aspect of the trading process and conditions of trader's everyday life. Also the structure of the article includes the detailed analysis of bargaining and its psychological context, as well as observing the mobile trader's behaviour and culture in terms of the theory of liminality: the existing of the mobile trader within the conditions of a spacial, economic and cultural "changeover". The key stage of mobile trade is bargaining. A bargain is presented as a successive set of ceremonial actions. Actions in their turn are a result of cultural diffusion. These actions were not only fulfilled with the aim of getting economic profit by the participants, but also with the aim of maintaining friendly connections and symbolic strengthening of prosperity. The detailed reviewing of mobile trade has allowed to make a conclusion that it was not the example of a situation when one economic culture being more developed in the context of the market subjugates the other culture. The cyclical nature of mobile trade, the severe conditions of mobile trader's work, traders and purchasers' determination to keep settled social connections and also the perception not only of importance of the result but also of the trade process have brought together different perceptions of benefits, material assets and profit.
