Description
Summary:In order to establish baseline information of reproductive biology on sexually mature brown bears (Ursus arctos) and moose (Alces alces), genital tracts were collected from forty-six 1.5 – 7.5 year old moose and six 2.5 – 8.5 year old male brown bear. Sperm samples from two individual animal specimens of U. arctos and A. alces were analysed. Overall there was a 20.75% of abnormal sperm calculated in U. arctos and 62.00% in A. alces. The frequency of sperm abnormalities, and their characteristics as determined by electron microscopy, may be useful in determining male fertility and how this varies with month of sampling and age.
