Description
Summary:The wild ungulates population of the Republic of Altay started recovering after the depression of 90s. Groups of Siberian stag (Cervus elaphus sibiricus), roe (Capreolus capreolus pygargus), wild boar (Sus scrofa) continue to grow in number after their reduction during snowy winters of 2008\09 and 2009\10. Illegal hunting doesn’t let the population of musk deer (Moschus moschiferus) stabilize because of the high cost for the musk of this species. Illegal hunting is the reason of a very slow recovering of the groups of moose (Alces alces). For the improvement of the protection of the ungulates population in the Republic of Altay, it is necessary to optimize the legislation system and use biotechnical measures more actively.
