Description
Summary:The paper gives the analysis of 70606 cases of rabies in all species of animals in Russia within the period of 1974–2002, including those cases in 9460 wild animals, and 386 cases of the death of people caused by hydrophobia. During 1974–1996 in 24 regions, territories and republics 9245 wild animals were examined for spontaneous infection with a rabies pathogenic organism. In spite of the increase of the proportion of fox in the structure of a disease rate of animals, its role in the infecting of people with rabies decreased since the mid-1990s. It depends, probably, on the reducing of pathogenicity of fox’s strains to man due to long (about 60 years) passing of the virus in the organism of that carnivorous animal and natural fixing of a pathogenic organism. That phenomenon was predicted in the hypothesis by G.N. Sidorov (1995) and was concretized later (2002). The change of an epidemiological impact of fox as the source of hydrophobia in man is a cyclic process and has been observed at least for about 700 years. The patterns of that process is not clear, and it is inadmissible to relax attention to the role of fox as the source of hydrophobia in people. In 1995–2002 in the territory of the country 673 rabid carnivorous animals of the Canidae family were annually revealed. The actual number of sick animals made up about 13.5 thousand individuals. An actual proportion of a disease rate in wild animals (without considering species of low significance and animals from the Arctic area) made up 63.7% (according to the data of registration – 92.4%) in fox, 30.9% (2.6) in raccoon dog, 3.4% (0.3%) in corsac fox, 2.0% (1.4%) in wolf. At the turn of XXth–XXIst centuries the rate of rabies revealing in carnivorous mammals of the Canidae family made up 0.43– 7.5% of a real disease rate of those animals.
