Description
Summary:In the course of birds censuses in the territory of the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok and the Central Botanical Garden (CBG), carried out between November 2003 and November 2007, several breeding territories of the Ural Owl (Strix uralensis) were discovered. Adult and young birds were repeatedly observed in the territories (fig. 1). Nests, however, were not found. During the period July-October 2007, 8 nestboxes for the Ural Owl were installed. The nestboxes were constructed according to a model published by V.E. Boreiko (2001): height 600-700 mm, bottom and hole about 300x300 mm, on the bottom were scattered 5-7 cm of sawdust. During an inspection in April 2008, 4 of 8 nestboxes (№№ 1, 3, 4, 6) were noted to be inhabited by Ural Owls. Thus, a half of installed nestboxes were occupied by Ural Owls. All occupied nestoxes were located in places where Ural Owls have been often observed during last years (fig. 1). According to our estimation, in all the nestboxes eggs were laid during the first half of April. The average clutch size was 3.5 eggs (n=4); the average brood size was 3.25 nestlings. Nestlings seemed to stay in a nest less than 30 days. Judging by the numerous feathers of small birds that were found in the nestboxes and underneath them, in 2008 the birds made up a considerable share of the Ural Owl's diet.
