Description
Summary:We collected data on breeding ecology of the Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) on the territory of the Kiev District in order to continue previous research of the same theme. We carried out search for new nests and monitored breeding territories and nests already known to us. We obtained data about dates and success of breeding, on the architecture of the nest constructions and on feeding habits of the birds. We studied 14 breeding territories and found and investigated 8 successful nests, which comprised 57% of a total number. The discovered nests (n=18) were located in the following way: 4 nests in the lower part of a crown, 11 in the middle part and 3 in the upper part of a crown. Three nests were situated in parts of crown affected by the witch-brooms disease. The nests were found in 4 tree species: pine (Pinus sylvestris), 14 nests; larch (Lбrix sp.), 2; poplar (Populus sp.), 1; ash (Acer negundo), 1. The constructions (n=18) were situated in the height from 12 to 21 m, with the average of 16.8 m. A clutch of five eggs was found; a rare occasion for the Goshawk. The average brood size was 2.25 nestlings per successful nest (n=8; range 1-3). Sex ratio of investigated nestlings was 7 males and 11 females. A death of a nestling by falling out from the nest was observed in two cases.
