Summary: | Itelmen language is alive only in the memory of the eldery itelmens, who are not numerous nowadays. The only thing we can do is to gather the material in order to preserve itelmen"s language and culture for the research study. In July, 2003 Kamchatka State Pedagogical University organised the expedition to village Tigil in order to record itelmen"s texts. The head of the research study is Uspenskaya Valentina Ivanovna, the aboriginal itelmen-woman. She perfetly knows her native language. She has been living in this village for a long time. During the expedition 25 itelmen"s texts were recorded on the audio and-video cassettes. The materials of the expedition were decoded in the laboratory conditions and were published in the collection "Itelmen spoken language" (KSPU, 2003). At present a new book "Itelmen folklore" is being prepared for the publishing. In the course of the expedition we met not only itelmens. Itelmens, Koryaks, indigenes of Kamchatka told us about their life. The human world is discrepant: benevolence, sincerity, openness of Tigil"s people adjoins with the severe poverty, even with abject poverty. During our presence in Tigil we were amazed that it was silent and very calm there. It was felt everywhere. Rarely you can meet two or three persons at the street, seldom you can here the laughter and the talk. The inhabitants say: " Tigil is dying". But the world is contradictory. People don"t allowed theselves to be lost in this boredom. May be, patience and the calm perception of their life is the most important thing, which they possessed from their ancestors.
