Description
In conditions of the northern Okhotsk Sea, starry flounder in the Tauyskaya Bay has rather short period of mass spawning in late May early June with duration about 20 days, and its whole spawning season lasts there no more than 40-45 days. The flounder males reach sexual maturity at the length 22-25 cm in the age of 4+ or 5+, the females at 28-31 cm in the age 6-7 years. The starry flounder females from the Bay have high fecundity up to 4280 thousand eggs, on average 1405 thousand eggs per specimen, but the eggs are rather fine, with diameter 1.031 ± 0.004 mm. Thus, in unfavorable conditions of the Bay, the species increases its reproductive potential due to reduction of the eggs size. It has the eggs of oligoplasmatic type, with positive buoyancy, the animal pole is on the bottom side, the yolk periblast and blastoderm are covered in the bottom-up direction. The temperature threshold of embryonic development on stage I was experimentally determined as -1.5 °C. Hatching of the starry flounder embryos occurred when the cumulative sum of temperature of incubation reached 1195 degree-hours. The incubation temperature increasing from 3.5 to 7.0 °C caused reducing of the time for embryonic development from 340 to 170 hours. The flounder has rather large-sized prelarvae with length 2.40-2.75 mm, on average 2.58 ± 0.02 mm. In conditions of the experiment, the prelarvae passed to the stage of mixed feeding by the end of the fourth day at the length 3.8-4.4 (4.08 ± 0.07) mm.
