Description
Summary:Daily production of zooplankton is estimated on the data of research cruises to the Barents Sea conducted in the summers of 2004-2007. The zooplankton samples were collected by vertical tows of Juday net (mesh size 168 µm) in the layer from the sea bottom or 100 m depth to the sea surface. The production was calculated using physiological method accounting its biomass and water temperature averaged for the towed layer. Absolute daily production was the highest in the Arctic Water (dry weight 3.272 ± 0.091 mg. m-3 per day) and the lowest in the eastern part of the sea (DW 0.830 ± 0.042 mg. m-3 per day). The specific daily production (P/B-ratio) was the highest in the Murmansk Coastal Water and in the Atlantic Water (0.034-0.035 day-1). Copepods dominated in the zooplankton community and their production prevailed, too. Total biomass and production of Calanus finmarchicus correlated positively with water temperature and salinity, but the biomass and production of C. glacialis, C. hyperboreus, and Metridia longa had negative relationship with the temperature and salinity. The biomass and daily production estimated for the Barents Sea are higher considerably than these parameters in other Arctic regions, as well as mean estimations for the whole World Ocean. The period of surveys is considered as warm years. Total annual yield of zooplankton in the Barents Sea for this period, estimated in 270. 106 tons of wet weight, is comparable with its values estimated for the same area in other warm periods.
