[Objectives]: To determine the rate of Staphylococcus aureus fecal carriage in wild small mammals recovered in Spain and to perform the genetic characterization of obtained isolates. [Methods]: Fecal samples of 101 small mammals (54 Microtus arvalis, 29 Apodemus sylvaticus, 6 Mus spretus, 6 Rattus norvegicus, 5 Crocidura russula, and 1 Eliomys quercinus) were recovered in two different Spanish localities (74 north-central, 27 southern). Wild mammals were captured by researchers at IREC during 2011-2013. Samples were suspended in saline solution and were inoculated in BHI with 6.5% NaCl; later, 100µl was seeded on Manitol-Salt Agar (MSA) and ORSAB plates. Isolates were identified by microbiological and molecular methods (PCR of nuc gene). Antibiotic susceptibility profile was determined by disk-diffusion method for 17 antibiotics. The presence of resistance genes mecA, mecC (mecALGA251), blaZ and blaZ allotype, as well as the detection of SCCmecXI were studied by PCR. Production of ß-lactamase was Objectives.
