| Summary: | Uses the plates from Picture Fables (1858) and even uses its title on the cover. See comments there. Besides the several fables that touch on Aesopic material, there is also a title-page illustration of the Fox and Mask--a fable untold in the book! The engravings here come out heavier than in Picture Fables. The translator (Henry W. Dulcken) is no longer mentioned. The first two copies are very similar. The second has a green cover, has new pictures pasted onto it, and adds two books in the series advertised on the page before the preface. The plates for both image and text seem to have deteriorated. The third copy changes the cover (to a green scene of kids reading), the frontispiece (to Ernst Griset's Eskimo version of The Thief and the Dog!), and the NY address for the publisher.
