Summary: | In this short paper I examine just two aspects of bird migration which rely on the data coordinated by the impressive Otto Herman. These provide an indication on the speed of progression of Hirundo rustica through Europe and the influence of temperature on the appearance of Alauda arvensis in Estonia. These brief examinations suggest that Herman’s data would justify fuller analysis, either in isolation or in combination with more recent data. I write this shortly before the centenary of his death when we are still greatly impressed with what he was able to achieve, yet humbled by our own inability to have subsequently created a continent-wide coordination of bird migration phenology |
